How to choose an NDIS provider in Brisbane

Choosing an NDIS provider in Brisbane comes down to a handful of practical checks: worker screening, insurance, a clear complaints process, a trial period, and whether they actually cover your suburb. Here's what to check, what to ask, and the warning signs to watch for before you sign up.

Brisbane has dozens of NDIS providers to choose from, ranging from large national organisations to small local teams. That choice is a good thing, but it also means doing some homework before you commit to one. The provider you choose affects who comes into your home, how consistent your support is, and how easily you can raise a problem if something isn't working. This guide covers exactly what to check, what to ask, and what to watch out for when you're comparing NDIS providers in Brisbane, whether it's your first provider or you're switching from one that isn't working out.

What to Check Before You Sign Up

Work through this list before you sign anything with an NDIS provider in Brisbane.

  • Worker screening. Every support worker who comes to your home should hold a current NDIS Worker Screening clearance. Ask to see proof of this, not just their word for it.
  • Insurance. The provider should carry public liability and professional indemnity insurance. This protects you if something goes wrong during a visit.
  • Complaints process. There should be a clear, written way to raise a concern and know it will actually be looked into, not just a verbal assurance to "let us know if there's a problem."
  • Trial period. A provider confident in their service will let you start with a short trial before you commit long term. Be wary of anyone pushing a long contract on day one.
  • Cancellation policy. Ask how much notice they need to cancel or reschedule a visit, and what happens if they cancel on you. Get this in writing.
  • Consistency of staff. Find out whether you'll see the same two or three people each visit, or a different face every time. Consistency makes a real difference to how support actually feels.
  • Coverage area. Confirm the provider actually services your suburb regularly, not just in theory. Some providers list a broad service area but rarely send anyone that far.

Registered vs Unregistered Providers

NDIS providers fall into two categories, registered and unregistered. The difference comes down to oversight and which plan types they can work with, not necessarily quality.

Registered providers have been audited against the NDIS Practice Standards by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. They can work with participants on any plan type, including NDIA-managed (also called agency-managed) plans. Unregistered providers haven't been through that audit, so they can only work with self-managed and plan-managed participants, not NDIA-managed plans. You can check a provider's registration status yourself on the NDIS Provider Register, or simply ask them directly; a legitimate provider will tell you straight away.

Being unregistered doesn't mean unqualified or unsafe. Every provider, registered or not, is expected to follow the NDIS Code of Conduct, and a reputable unregistered provider will still carry proper insurance and screen its workers just as thoroughly. Registration mainly determines who can use a provider, not how good the support is. We've written a full breakdown of what registration actually means for you in Registered vs unregistered NDIS providers.

For context, Supportr is not currently NDIS-registered. We work with self-managed and plan-managed participants across Brisbane and South East Queensland. If you're on an NDIA-managed plan, you'll need a registered provider instead. You can read more about plan types on our NDIS information page, and more about how we work on our About page.

Questions to Ask a Provider

Once you've narrowed your options down, ask these questions before you commit. A good NDIS provider in Brisbane will answer all of them clearly and without hesitation.

  • How many team members will I see? Ask for a specific number, not "it depends." Two or three consistent people is a reasonable standard.
  • What happens if my regular worker is sick? There should be a backup plan, ideally someone from your existing team, not a stranger sent at short notice.
  • Can I change my schedule? Life changes. Find out how much flexibility you have and how much notice the provider needs.
  • What's your cancellation policy? Get the notice period and any fees in writing, for cancellations on both sides.
  • Are your workers screened? Every worker should hold a current NDIS Worker Screening clearance. If a provider is vague on this, take it as a warning sign.
  • How do you handle complaints? Ask for the actual process: who you'd speak to, and how quickly you can expect a response.
  • Is there a minimum contract length? Reputable providers don't lock you in. You should be able to leave if it's not working out.
  • Can I meet my worker before support starts? A short introduction before the first real visit helps you both start off comfortably.

Red Flags

A few warning signs are worth taking seriously when you're comparing NDIS providers in Brisbane.

  • High staff turnover. If you keep meeting new people, or the provider can't tell you who will actually be supporting you, that's a sign of deeper problems.
  • No trial period. Being pushed straight into a long-term commitment before you've even met your support worker is a bad sign.
  • Pressure to sign contracts quickly. A provider that rushes you into paperwork, or discourages you from reading it properly, doesn't have your interests front of mind.
  • Vague about qualifications. If a provider can't clearly explain their workers' screening, training or experience, ask again. If they still can't answer, that's your cue to walk away.
  • Not responsive to calls or messages. How a provider treats you before you've signed up is usually a preview of how they'll treat you afterwards.
