South East Queensland is home to a large and growing NDIS participant population, spread across one of Australia's most geographically varied regions — from dense inner-city suburbs to outer growth corridors and semi-rural communities. Finding the right support can look very different depending on where you live.
This guide covers what to look for, how location affects your options, and what questions to ask when comparing providers across SEQ.
Understanding the SEQ NDIS landscape
SEQ's NDIS market is concentrated in inner Brisbane and the northern Gold Coast, where the highest density of participants and providers tends to cluster. As you move into outer areas — Logan's southern reaches, western Ipswich, Beaudesert, Moreton Bay, and Redlands — provider availability thins out, and travel time becomes a real factor in service quality.
This matters because a provider based in Brisbane CBD serving participants in Beaudesert or Caboolture faces real logistical challenges. Travel time cuts into funded support time, can result in inconsistent staffing, and affects how reliably a worker can show up. When evaluating providers in outer SEQ, ask directly where their workers are based and how they manage travel for your area.
What types of support are available in SEQ?
Most Core Supports are available across the region, including:
- Daily living support — personal care, meal preparation, household assistance (Core Supports category 01)
- Social and community participation — getting out into the community with a support worker (category 04)
- In-home support — assistance within the participant's home environment
- Group activities — day programs and group-based support, which can be cost-effective ways to use funding
Capacity Building supports — including Support Coordination and various allied health therapies — are also available throughout the region, though again, availability varies by area.
Registered vs unregistered providers
Not all providers in SEQ are registered with the NDIS. Registered providers have met quality and compliance requirements set by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Unregistered providers have not gone through that process — but this does not mean they are lower quality. Many experienced, committed providers operate without registration, particularly sole traders and smaller organisations.
Whether you can use an unregistered provider depends on your plan management type. If you are self-managed or plan-managed, you can choose any provider. If you are NDIA-managed, you are limited to registered providers only.
Supportr is an unregistered provider. We work with self-managed and plan-managed participants across SEQ, including Logan, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Redlands, Caboolture, North Lakes, Redcliffe, Beaudesert, and surrounding areas.
How to find providers in your area
The NDIS Provider Finder on the NDIS website lists registered providers by location and service type. For unregistered providers, word of mouth, community Facebook groups, and referrals from your LAC or Support Coordinator are often the most reliable sources.
When you contact a provider, ask:
- Do you service my specific suburb or area?
- Where are your support workers based?
- How do you handle worker availability if my regular worker is unavailable?
- What is your current wait time for new participants?
- Are you registered with the NDIS, or unregistered?
